Coupon Policies

Now that you know how to clip, file, shop, talk the talk and walk the walk, you’re almost there, but you’re not done yet! All your coupon skills are useless without a solid understanding of store policies. Like Sir Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is Power”.

Follow these important steps to ensure you’re armed with the right kind of knowledge.

1. Pick a store. Beginners should get to know one store at a time. Each is a little different in their policies, promotions, and reward systems. As soon as you get one store down, move on to the next. In no time, you’ll be familiar with a handful of stores, completely confident, rocking your coupon knowledge, and slashing your budget.

2. Obtain the store’s policy. Go to the store’s official website and enter “coupon policy” in the search bar. Print off the policy, and keep it in your binder. Ideally, you’re going to contact your chosen store (via phone or email) and request that a copy of their coupon policy be mailed to you. When you receive a hard copy, it will come on company letterhead addressed straight to you.

3. Keep the policy with you. Make a spot in the back of your binder for store policies–that way you’ll have them with you when you go shopping. This comes in handy at checkout when a coupon is being refused or a situation arises. It’s no longer your word against the cashier’s. You’re now armed with the corporate policy on company letterhead. Who can argue with that?

4. Befriend the Bigwigs. Take the time to set up a meeting with management. If you are serious about couponing, this really is an important step. Through experience I’ve learned that sooner or later you will end up speaking with the manager. So why not ensure that it happens in a controlled, peaceful environment rather than in the midst of a controversial discussion with your cashier? Make it a quick meeting where you simply introduce yourself, inquire into the coupon policy and see if there’s anything you should know about that specific store. The manager will appreciate your efforts, and you’ll leave feeling better prepared and more comfortable shopping at that store. Hopefully, in the end, you’ll also have a new coupon ally.

5. Understand Rain Checks. A Rain Check is a slip of paper provided by the store when a sale item is out of stock. It authorizes you to come back when the item is again in stock and buy it at the sale price. Rain Check policies vary by store, so learn your store’s rules.

Rain Check Points to Consider

• Make sure the coupons you plan to use on the Rain Check item won’t expire before the store restocks

• Don’t bother getting a Rain Check for something that is also included in a Promotion like, “Spend $10, Save $4 Instantly” UNLESS you know the Promotion extends beyond the sale date. The Rain Check is valid for the sale price only.

• You cannot get a Rain Check on clearance prices

• When redeeming Rain Checks, be courteous of your checker. Let her know beforehand that you have a Rain Check; she’ll need to enter the amount manually.

Rain Check

Is a favorite, can’t-live-without something on sale? Get a Rain Check for the maximum quantity allowed. Then hurry your little self over to Ebay, and buy all the coupons you need. Go back to the store when the item is in stock (or consider special ordering) and use your additional coupons. Voila! Easy as Rain Check pie!

Stockpile? YES!

Stockpiling alone will save you hundreds! Stocking up on a product when it’s super cheap is not a groundbreaking idea. It’s common sense, but most shoppers still aren’t doing it!

So, all you coupon virgins, how much do you pay for a box of cereal (name brand or generic, it doesn’t matter)? If you’re already a Savvy Couponer, how much DID you used to pay? I don’t care where you live or shop, I’m guessing that without coupons, you usually pay at least $1.98 per box of cereal, and that’s giving you the benefit of the doubt. I know many of you are paying $6-8.00 for a two pack of cereal at the Wholesale Club (you know, the place that’s charging you an annual fee just so they can rip you off on the cereal mark-ups)! Come on, fess up!

Here’s how stockpiling ALONE can save you real money, no matter how much time you have to devote to deal-finding.

Even the “greenie” couponers know that at least twice per month most stores will have some varieties of cereal priced at under $1.00 (after coupons). Simply by “stocking-up” on a month’s worth of cereal the next time it’s $0.70 per box will save you $10+ per month (depending on how much cereal you eat). My family of 3 goes through about 12 boxes of cereal per month. I was paying about $3.00 per box before my Savvy Couponer days, now I don’t pay over $0.50. That means I save $30 EVERY MONTH just because I stockpile cereal when it’s at a rock bottom price.

The more products you shop for with coupons, the more you’ll save. But if you’re feeling too overwhelmed, just start with a few things your family uses often. Start with products like cereal or high priced items like shampoo and razors. What do those Costco 12 pack of Gillette razor blades cost? $50 or more? We Savvy Couponers stockpile razors from national stores like Target when they’re $0.99 or less (and that’s for two blades). If you use one blade per month, you’ll save $47 OR MORE per year, just by stockpiling razors at the right time! And best of all, products like razors don’t even take up much space! Remove them from their bulky packaging and 6 razors+ 12 blades will just about fit in a gallon Ziploc bag! What are you waiting for?

First Step to becoming a Savvy Couponer

Get ready to change the way you shop, the way you eat, the way you plan meals, and the way you feel about the grocery store.
• No more late afternoon runs to the grocery store to get what you need for dinner
• No more weekly menu with its accompanying list of groceries to be purchased regardless of price
• No more HUGE monthly shopping trip to the local wholesale club and a gallon jar of mayonnaise to try and fit in the fridge
• No more Kleenex box placed strategically in the bathroom because you’re out of toilet paper again

Say good-bye to those days, and say HELLO to the Savvy Couponer way!

• You’ll be cooking according to what’s on sale.
• You’ll be visiting multiple stores, saving from 50 to 90%.
• You’ll be shopping with coupons while a product is on sale and stocking up while it’s cheap or free.
• You’ll eliminate those last minute trips to the store because everything you need will be right at your fingertips.

What and How of Couponing

Newspaper Coupons

What’s a coupon insert?
Coupon inserts come in your Sunday newspaper. Find them amongst the retail ads. They are nearly always put out by one of three companies:
SS: Smart Source
RP: Red Plum
PG: Proctor & Gamble (once per month)

How do I get the coupons?

Subscribe to the newspaper! In fact, we suggest you subscribe to 4-6 copies of the Sunday paper.
Talk to your local convenience store or hotel to see if they’ll give their old papers to you.
Check coffee shops and fast food restaurants where you’re a patron.
Ask your friends, family, co-workers, church members if they’ll save their inserts for you.
Buy coupons (pay a handling fee) by purchasing coupons from sites like thecouponclippers.com
Purchase off the stand from stores like Walmart that sell the Sunday Paper all week.

How do I get a coupon from an old date? Like SS 8/30?

When we refer to a date, this means the coupon came from a Sunday newspaper insert. You need to start saving all your coupon inserts and either clipping and organizing by category or organizing un-clipped coupons by date. If you have not been saving your inserts or if you’re new and we post about a coupon from a past week, you’ll be a bit out of luck. Always consider buying clipped coupons online if you want an item badly enough.

Where are my inserts?

Holiday weekends carry no inserts. If you didn’t receive your inserts on any other week, contact your newspaper provider and request they be delivered to you. If you are purchasing off the stand, you MUST check your paper for coupon inserts before you pay. Once you pay for your newspaper, you are out of luck if there are no coupons inside.

How do I get a preview of the upcoming coupons?

Check out TaylorTownPreview.com or SundayCouponPreview.com and watch for the Sunday insert preview each Saturday.

Why didn’t I get the coupons I saw in the preview?

Coupons and values vary by region. If you live in an area that doubles all coupons $0.50 and under, you will see more $1.00/2 coupons to prevent you from doubling. Just like store prices and promotions, coupon values also vary based on grocery competition in your area. The more stores you have aggressively competing for your business, the better for you!

What can I do with my expired coupons?

Donate them to a military family stationed overseas! Coupons may be used up to six months past their expiration date at overseas military commissaries. Join KCL in donating to US Air Force Okinawa, Japan. At the end of each month, send your coupons to our expired coupon rep who’ll mail them to Japan once per month. More info here

Printable Coupons

How do I find printable coupons?
Printable coupon database is your one-stop for the most user-friendly and comprehensive printable coupon list on the web! In addition to coupons from a variety of manufacturer’s sites, the database provides coupons from sources such as these:
Coupons.com
SmartSource.com
RedPlum.com

How many times may I print each coupon?

You can print nearly all coupons two times per computer by using the back browser (the little < sign in your toolbar). Hit the back button and then click “resend” to print the coupon a second time! Some printable coupon sites, you have to manually go back and reselect the coupon a second time.

How can I search the printable coupon database?

Hold down Ctrl + S. This will bring up a search box, then you can search the database for a particular brand or product.

What does it mean when a coupon says “Do not Double”?
This is meant to communicate to the retailer, they will not be reimbursed for any greater than the value of the coupon. A store may or may not double your coupon that reads “do not double” as part of a store doubling promotion. The wording is there to protect the manufacturer.

eCoupons

What is an eCoupon?
An eCoupon is an electronic coupon get online in a similar manner to a printable coupon. Instead of printing the coupon, you load it onto your store loyalty card. When you scan your loyalty card at the cash register, or give your phone number, you will automatically receive the savings if you’ve made a qualifying purchase.

Where do I find eCoupons?
ECoupons may be loaded to your store loyalty card from the following sources:
Cellfire.com
Shortcuts.com
PGeSAVER.com
Upromise.com

Let’s go Shopping!

How do you calculate your final prices?

Final Prices can get confusing when the items listed are part of a store promotion. Here’s an example of a typical store promo: Buy 4 participating items and save $4.00 instantly at the cash register.

scenario1

Here is another common store promotion. Spend minimum of $30.00 on participating products and receive a catalina coupon worth $15 on your next order. We report final prices based on the assumption that you will do more than one transaction while ‘rolling’ your $15 off catalina from one transaction to the next! On the below scenario, your first transaction you will actually pay more ($1.25 out of pocket) for the Nature Valley Granola Bars. But you will complete your first transaction by receiving a $15 coupon good toward any next purchase (excludes alcohol and lottery tickets). The savings we report factors in the $15 catalina coupon. On your second, third, etc transactions, your actual out of pocket will match our reported final price because you’ll be redeeming your $15 catalina in addition to manufacturer coupons.

scenario2

What does it mean to “roll” a catalina?

This refers to the practice of separating your purchase into multiple transactions in order to use register catalina coupons from your first transaction to pay for your second transaction. Another catalina prints from the 2nd transaction that pays for the 3rd transaction and so on.

When a store promotion specifies Spend $25, save $10, does the $25 have to be my total after I present my coupons?

No! You only must reach a minimum of $25 before tax. You may pay with as many coupons as you have. Even if your total after coupons is only $11.00, you will still save that advertised $10.00.

How do I know which coupons I can use together to “stack”?

You may only use one manufacturer coupon per item. A manufacturer coupon and a store coupon may be used together to purchase one item as long as neither coupon prohibits it.

Manufacturer coupons will state “Manufacturer coupon” across the top of the coupons.

Newspaper insert coupons: 99% of the time these are manufacturer coupons. Occasionally, Target will have store coupons in the Sunday paper as well.

Printable coupons: Again, most printable coupons are manufacturer.

Blinkies: Blinkies are manufacturer coupons

Tearpads: Tearpads are manufacturer coupons

Peelies: Peelies are manufacturer coupons

eCoupons: eCoupons are manufacturer coupons

Welcome

Hi,

I am starting this blog because I have been asked how I can save so much couponing. I have read through site but they are geared towards stores that double coupons and usually on the east coast. I live in Southern Cali and we do not have stores that double coupons. I will show you how I use coupons and sales to get the most for less. I am not like the extreme couponers you see on tv who get everything for free but I do not pay full price either. I have a stock pile started for my family of 3 plus 2 cats and 1 dog. Please follow me as I post about deals I find every day. I usually shop once a week at the local gocery store Stater Brothers and I save just as much as I spend and sometimes I save more then I spend. I will post tips and photos of purchase that I make along the way and show you how an everyday person can get the most out of their money.
